Simplex In Industrial Intercom Systems. Part 2

Advantages Of Simplex Communication At Industrial Sites

At the current time the simplex type of connection provides maximum ease of use, quality and functional capabilities of industrial intercom systems. It’s due to a number of the simplex mode and the industrial enterprises specifics.

The advantages of simplex communication which allow avoiding any difficulties connected with harsh operational conditions in such industries as energy, chemical, oil and gas, mining and steel industry are given below:

Necessity Simplex Feature Comparative Description
Clear and intelligible speech at high-level ambient noise

No acoustic feedback or other distortion One-way communication session provides alternate operation of the microphone and speaker. Automatic echo suppression circuits (in half-duplex) decrease speech intelligibility considerably in such conditions.
Receiving other calls and processing the priority connections during the conversation

No need for disconnection of one call while receiving another incoming call. The communication channel is free between subscribers’ messages. In the simplex mode the communication channel is occupied only while receiving and transmitting of voice message (each time a new connection is created). In duplex and semiduplex modes the channel is occupied until the subscribers finish the communication.
Call stations using in workwear and gloves which limit operational procedures; the “Last Call” function

*in such cases simplex connection is usually used
Calling a subscriber by a single pressing the corresponding key The call can be made by:
  • pressing direct button on the device
  • using a double key and a pedal
Direct call keys, double keys and pedals allow dialing the last calling subscriber, if it’s necessary to solve production issues immediately.
No handset - hands are free while message receiving.
No dial pad - convenient using in protective gloves as well as in lack of space.
One-side control of the two-way conversation, wiretapping

Hands-free or Talk-back calls function Special way of connections management for “. The call is initiated by the subscriber-initiator, and then it can be controlled by one subscriber only: called party or initiator itself for “talk-back” function. So, only one subscriber shall press his key for reply, the other party can listen and speak freely, without any manipulations.
Group call,
conference call

No distortion or limitations for messages transmitting to any number of subscribers. The same signal source can be connected to any number of subscribers. Group connections in duplex mode require special conference systems which mix signals from different sources. If the number of sources (group participants) becomes higher, the quality of the received signal becomes worse. At the same time more resources to process the signal are required.
Integration with other systems

Integration with the systems of mobile radio, public address and emergency communication This integration is not typical of duplex systems as radio communication is simplex. Alarm systems are based on group connections (the previous point).
